What Is an Online Course's Ideal Customer Profile, and How Do You Research It?

How to describe an audience through needs, circumstances, and purchase readiness, using evidence, segmentation, and a working profile for the school.

At WeStudy, we recommend describing customers through their situation, tasks, and selection criteria rather than decorative traits. Age, city, and favorite social network matter only when they genuinely affect needs, learning, or payment decisions.

A typical ‘avatar’ may look detailed without helping marketing: ‘Olena, 34, likes coffee and wants to develop.’ It does not explain why she needs a course today, which risk she wants to reduce, or what evidence of quality would convince her.

Start with the Moment of Change

People usually seek learning after an event: a new role, lost client, changed tool, manager's requirement, or plans for a product. The event makes a problem visible and triggers a search, beyond demographic membership.

Describe the situation before demand emerged.

What did the person do previously?

Why did the old approach stop working?

What happens if nothing changes?

This context helps create recognizable advertising and content without exaggeration.

Where to Find Audience Evidence

Start with existing records: pre-course questionnaires, support correspondence, consultation notes, webinar responses, searches, and refund reasons. Group statements into desired progress, barriers, and trust criteria.

Add interviews with successful students and people who hesitated, declined, or did not finish. Advocates explain value; doubts and unsuccessful experiences reveal inaccurate segmentation.

For a new product, find people already addressing similar tasks through videos, consultants, employees, or postponement.

A course often competes with familiar ways of avoiding training rather than another school.

Questions for a Useful Interview

Ask about a specific recent event. ‘When did you last seek training on this topic?’ is more useful than ‘Would you buy a course?’ Past behavior contains fewer polite hypothetical answers and more real constraints.

Explore the sequence: what happened first, where they searched, whom they asked, which options they reviewed, and what delayed the decision. Ask what could rule out an attractive offer. This reveals criteria such as time, support, language, certification, privacy, or smartphone access.

Do not turn the conversation into a presentation. If someone misunderstands something, record the wording before correcting them. Other visitors may interpret the site similarly.

Segment by Task and Readiness

People in the same profession may need different products: foundations, a solution to a specific work problem, or evidence of competence for an employer. One message risks making the promise too general.

A useful segment shares circumstances, desired outcomes, and a sufficiently similar purchase path. It must also be reachable through specific channels. Detailed description cannot create a market if the group cannot be found or does not consider the problem important.

Assess readiness separately. Someone may need training but lack time for three months. A company may support the idea without an approved budget. These constraints affect the offer and sales cycle without making the segment unsuitable in principle.

Turn Research into a Working Profile

Create a brief document rather than an invented biography. Include the trigger, work task, consequences of no change, alternatives, selection criteria, doubts, information channels, readiness signals, and reasons for poor fit.

Add respondents' actual wording, identified as research quotations. This helps advertising, content, and page writers use customers' language. Add practical conclusions: which example to show, question to explain, and format to offer.

Include exclusion criteria. A program may not suit people expecting results without practice or lacking foundations. Clear boundaries protect learning and reduce support workload.

Using the Profile in Daily Work

Before creating content, identify the segment, decision stage, and next action. Beginners need a problem explained, prepared buyers need format comparisons, and corporate customers need implementation and reporting details. The profile creates shared language across marketing, sales, and instructional design.

Compare actual buyers with the profile. If another audience arrives, examine the message attracting them. It may reveal a promising segment or expectations the advertising has created incorrectly.

When to Update the Profile

Review after product, price, or market changes and after every 20–30 substantive conversations. Avoid rewriting it around one unusual response. Look for repeated signals and identify the evidence behind each conclusion.

Finish with a simple test: can a new team member use it to distinguish a suitable inquiry from an incidental contact and choose a relevant argument?

WeStudy registration, progress, and completion data can be combined with marketing observations to refine the profile using behavior alongside students' statements.
