Choosing an AI tutor for learning tasks: ChatGPT, Gemini, Khanmigo, and NotebookLM, access, source work, and your own trial.

Choosing an AI tutor can start with the longest feature list: explanations, quizzes, or file handling. Students usually need more specific help: understanding one problem step, examining a teacher's materials, or practicing an explanation. The best tool supports that action while leaving enough work to the learner.

This review compares ChatGPT, Gemini, Khanmigo, and NotebookLM learning scenarios using official descriptions checked on September 30, 2026. It is not laboratory model testing or a universal accuracy ranking. The author's scenarios support personal trials. Choose an approach with accessible materials, a clear assistant role, and a way to verify independent learning.

What Do We Mean by an AI Tutor?

Not every chat answering study questions acts as a tutor. Tutoring interacts with your attempt: clarifies objectives, offers relevant hints, checks understanding, and provides a new task. Even a dedicated learning mode does not guarantee this sequence every time. Assess the actual session rather than only the product name or homepage personalization promise.

This comparison includes general assistants with study modes, a specialized service, and a source-based assistant. Their roles differ. NotebookLM, for example, can be considered a materials tool rather than a complete subject-teacher replacement. Recognizing roles prevents disappointment when a service handles one task well but is expected to perform another.

Define the Learning Session Type First

Being stuck on a problem step needs dialogue around your attempt. Preparing from many lectures needs source work and verifiable references. Practice within an existing curriculum benefits from connection to its content. Oral-explanation practice requires checking the interaction method available in your environment.

Do not choose by the abstract label ‘smartest.’ Take a typical assignment and record expected help: one question about a calculation error without the complete solution, or a note passage supporting a definition. A specific scenario creates a repeatable, verifiable comparison.

ChatGPT for Dialogue Around Your Own Attempt

Study Mode in ChatGPT supports studying topics through questions and explanations. Organize a session around your reasoning, starting with preparation level, objective, and the exact sticking point. Request no movement to the next step until you answer the current follow-up.

A hypothetical student shows an equation and their transformation, requesting only preservation-of-equality checking. Useful help directs attention to the action and offers another case after correction. A full immediate solution can serve as analysis, but independence needs a different task. Trial behavior matters more than general stylistic impressions.

For longer work, Projects in ChatGPT organize related files and conversations. Collected context does not guarantee correct reading of each document. Check important definitions, formulas, and references against course materials. Tutoring should support subject work rather than replace sources with confident paraphrases.

Gemini for Guided Study

Gemini's learning tools offer Guided Learning for gradual exploration. Consider sessions connecting explanations with your answers and examples. State what is already learned, the action practiced, and desired help level. Without boundaries, conversation can become a general topic overview.

A hypothetical student prepares a short natural-phenomenon explanation, gives their own account, and requests a question about one causal connection. After clarification, they use another example. Check whether questions connect to the answer rather than repeat a generic ‘why?’ Appropriate transitions determine usefulness.

For file-based work, check account capabilities and upload conditions. Do not assume equal handling of every format or large document. Begin with short verified material so you can detect preserved terms, missing conditions, or unmarked outside information.

Khanmigo for Learning Alongside Khan Academy Materials

Khanmigo for learners connects with Khan Academy's learning environment, suiting practice within its subject content. For Ukrainian audiences, start with access: according to the official plan description, individual Learner and Parent plans are available in the United States, while institutional deployments have separate conditions.

Free Teacher Tools do not automatically provide tutoring access to every student. Do not make Khanmigo compulsory without checking each participant's access. If available, try a familiar topic. Check whether hints help students continue, understand corrections, and complete a new case afterward.

Check language separately too. Khan Academy's language-support documentation includes Ukrainian but describes differences in language-quality validation. Listing a language does not guarantee equal terminology accuracy. Use verifiable material and check unfamiliar wording against learning sources.

NotebookLM for Learning from Your Own Sources

NotebookLM offers learning tools for working with materials, including flashcards and quizzes. Consider it when the learning foundation is already defined: lectures, a textbook chapter, or verified documents. Ask whether it supports your particular source collection rather than whether the chat knows the topic generally.

For module review before a seminar, students select materials, draft and check questions, and answer before opening explanations. After errors, they return to passages. An automatic quiz is neither an infallible key nor complete course coverage. Review its objective and content because the model may select secondary details.

NotebookLM particularly suits routes preserving claim provenance. References still need reading: passages may support only part of an answer. Retain your own attempt for tutoring tasks. Merely listening to or reading overviews introduces content without demonstrating independent recall and application.

Compare Roles Rather Than Button Counts

  • Learning need: Examine your own problem-solving step

What to try: ChatGPT Study Mode or Gemini Guided Learning

What to check: Whether the key decision remains with the student

  • Learning need: Work with Khan Academy materials

What to try: Khanmigo where appropriate access is available

What to check: Geography, plan, and actual learning interaction

  • Learning need: Review your lectures and documents

    What to try: NotebookLM

What to check: Fit between questions, sources, and course objectives

  • Learning need: Sustain a longer personal learning path

What to try: A chosen assistant plus your own work log

What to check: Whether independent outcomes are visible between sessions

This table guides a trial rather than establishes absolute superiority. Features overlap, and access depends on account and environment. A small task-based check matters more than the longest product description. A tool excellent at summaries may be awkward for your preferred answer and feedback process.

Run the Same Trial in Two Services

Choose a short topic with a verifiable answer. Prepare your attempt with one real or instructional error and the same instruction. Request the checking point first, then a limited hint. Different prompts cannot fairly reveal behavior differences. Keep conditions similar and material simple enough to assess feedback.

Record whether the assistant understood the objective, noticed the step, preserved conditions, and let you answer. Complete a new task independently afterward. This is neither a scientific experiment nor proof of general effectiveness, but supports personal selection and reveals prompt changes needed before regular use.

Do Not Judge Learning by Conversational Pleasantness

A friendly tone and clear explanations matter but do not suffice. An assistant may confidently approve an error or do the work itself. After dialogue, identify a decision you can explain without chat. If unclear, the session may have offered comfortable familiarity without needed practice. Change the interaction order next time.

Strictness alone is not a selection criterion either. Constant questions without relevant explanation can hinder learners missing prerequisites. Good support varies: a question, example, or short direct answer as appropriate. Test whether you can control this balance and understand each help type's role.

Check Access Before Paying

Start with existing access and a small scenario. Before subscribing, verify features, language, device, limits, and your plan's conditions on official pages rather than old reviews or someone else's screenshot. Distinguish learner access from teacher tools, and personal accounts from institutional arrangements. One product name may cover different offers.

Do not buy several services merely to confirm each other's answers. Define separate roles first. Source work in one and dialogue in another may justify combination. Duplicated actions do not necessarily improve learning. Consider the real process and verification time.

Mathematics: Assess the Explanation of a Transition

Choose a problem whose answer you know and introduce a substantive error, such as applying a percentage to the wrong base. Ask the assistant to examine your work and question the first doubtful step. This reveals attention to reasoning rather than simply supplying a correct number and new solution.

Test transfer next: request a similar problem with another scenario and solve it independently. If an answer appears immediately, refine the next-attempt format. Also assess formula readability, entering your steps, and returning to a particular point. These details affect daily practice substantially.

One correct calculation does not establish overall quality. Simple arithmetic and complex proofs differ. Start with your course's typical tasks while retaining the trial's limits. This article offers a personal checking approach rather than measured comparisons between models.

Humanities: Leave Room for Interpretation

For historical or literary text, a tutor should distinguish facts, interpretations, and evaluations. Provide a short passage and your claim. Ask which sentence supports it and where another argument is needed. Check outside information separately. A confident explanation does not automatically validate a new fact.

Good learning dialogue is more than guessing one correct reading. Request an alternative interpretation with its supporting detail, then compare both yourself. This tests evidence work rather than attractive wording generation. More interpretations are not automatically better.

For a defined source-based course, keep sources accessible. Convenient material work can outweigh general capabilities. If external context is required, clarify permitted sources and time boundaries first. Do not mix passage analysis with plausible general background that misses teacher requirements.

Programming: Check Understanding of Your Own Code

The shortest route to a working program may not maximize learning. Supply a small erroneous code fragment and expected behavior. Ask which assumption to test first without a complete rewrite. Then add a check or simple test distinguishing possible causes yourself.

Check attention to language, version, and assignment constraints. An unfamiliar library instead of a basic construct may be technically interesting but educationally unsuitable. Context clarification can help; constantly restoring requirements may consume more attention than the support provides.

After correction, explain why the earlier version failed and change one condition. Run the program in your environment. AI assurances do not replace execution. The tutor supports analysis, while code behavior and your understanding verify the result rather than confidence of wording.

Create Your Own Selection Card

Instead of a general score out of ten, record specific criteria: language support, convenient course-material input, room for your answers, clear explanation provenance, and access on your device within your budget. Different students weight these differently.

A student with many lectures may value source work more than voice conversation. Oral-explanation practice may prioritize dialogue; procedural tasks gradual analysis. There is no need to pay for capabilities outside regular learning work.

Add ‘what I had to correct myself’: excessive finished answers, inaccurate references, unnecessary complexity, or lost conditions. This captures hidden time costs. Pleasant interfaces and quick replies matter, but so does how easily help can be checked and directed.

When to End the Trial and Change Approach

If several clarifications fail to secure the format or stop an unverified repeated claim, you need not continue. Save the question and consult a textbook, teacher, or appropriate resource. Long chat histories have no independent value. What matters is demonstrable understanding outside the dialogue.

Do not switch services after every awkward answer either. First check whether the prompt names the topic, objective, material, and desired help. Repeated problems despite sufficient context support changing tools or methods. This reduces random platform switching and makes personal choices better grounded.

Keep definitions, verified examples, and open questions in your own study notes. These support transitions if access or conditions change. Learning progress should not depend on one chat. Tutors can change while clear personal records and practice remain.

After choosing, use the service normally for a short period and revisit the criteria card. Are you using intended features, explaining independently more easily, or spending most time correcting outputs? This separates initial excitement from lasting value. Revise decisions when tasks, access, or working methods change.

Keep Your Own Learning Outcome

After a session, retain a small piece of work: a corrected explanation, new problem, or personal conclusion. A long chat may not reveal progress conveniently. An independent result shows change and preserves the objective across services rather than restarting from random general queries.

In a WeStudy course, teachers can provide shared criteria for different AI assistants. Students choose accessible tools but demonstrate the same action: explanation, calculation, or reasoned analysis. This assesses learning without tying everyone to one external service unavailable to some.

The WeStudy LMS platform can combine verified materials, assignments, and independent answers. An AI tutor then has a defined place between source and personal student work. The best choice helps you think more precisely, request appropriate support, and perform new tasks after conversation ends.
