How to turn professional experience into a specific course topic, separate essentials from extras, and design a complete student outcome.

At WeStudy, we recommend starting course creation by defining the change students can demonstrate after learning rather than by recording videos.

Experts know far more than one program requires, so the main task at the start is to draw a clear boundary rather than collect all their knowledge.

Why a Broad Topic Produces a Weak Course

‘A marketing course’ or ‘everything about management’ does not explain whom the program serves or what learners will complete. Creators try to include the industry's history, dozens of tools, and every possible exception. Production drags on, while students get lost in the materials.

Narrow the topic to a situation: replace ‘business finance’ with ‘building a monthly payment calendar for a small company.’ A specific task immediately defines the necessary examples, starting level, and criteria for a finished result.

Take Stock of Your Expertise

List typical client requests, work procedures, beginner mistakes, your templates, and recurring solutions. Do not turn this list into the curriculum. First identify which elements lead to one practical outcome and which belong in another product.

Distinguish three layers.

The first is essential knowledge without which the action is unsafe or impossible.

The second is practice that develops the skill.

The third is reference material students can revisit as needed.

This reduces the length of the main lessons without sacrificing depth.

Describe the Starting Point and Destination

The starting point is more specific than ‘beginner.’ State what people can already do, which data or tools they can access, and the situation in which they will apply the knowledge.

The destination should be observable: a prepared document, completed procedure, conducted meeting, or established process.

Between these points, place the decisions students need to learn to make. These form the modules. If a step neither affects the outcome nor prevents an important mistake, move it to a bonus or remove it.

Test the Topic Before Production

Have a few conversations with prospective participants. Show them the task, outcome, approximate workload, and practice format rather than an attractive title. Ask what they have already tried, where they got stuck, and which evidence would help them trust the program.

After the interviews, create a small pilot: one module or a practical workshop. Observe which explanations are genuinely needed and what the expert considers obvious only because of experience. A pilot often shortens the future program while making it stronger.

Define an Editorial Filter

Before adding a lesson, ask three questions: does it help achieve the stated outcome, is it needed at this stage, and can it be applied in practice? If the answer is no, the material should not enter the main learning path.

This filter protects the course from endless expansion. It also simplifies updates: the team understands which parts are critical and which can be replaced without rebuilding the entire program.

The Next Step

Describe the course in one sentence:

‘After the program, [specific audience] will be able to [observable action] in [real situation].’

Then keep only content supporting that promise. With WeStudy, you can first assemble a short pilot, test it with a small group, and expand the program based on students' actual questions.
