How to combine the learning action, text, visuals, and practice in a lesson plan. Detail levels, accessibility, and checking materials before production.

At WeStudy, we use a storyboard as a bridge between instructional ideas and production. It shows what students see, hear, and do at each moment of a lesson, allowing the team to fix the logic before recording video or creating complex animation.

How Much Detail Is Needed?

A sequence of blocks and actions is enough for a simple text lesson. For video with slides, divide the document into narration, visuals, and technical notes. An interactive module also needs answer options, transitions, and system responses.

A storyboard need not be an artistic masterpiece. Diagrams, simple sketches, and links to examples are enough if the team shares an understanding of the idea. Detail matters where a mistake would require rerecording or redevelopment.

Start with the Learning Action

Record the lesson outcome at the top of the page. Then identify which explanations, examples, and exercises lead to it. If a frame does not support the action, it may be decorative or unnecessary.

Do not reserve practice for the end. After a new concept, give a small action: choose an option, find a mistake, or predict a consequence. A storyboard reveals long passive stretches without student participation.

Align Words and Images

Do not reproduce the entire narration on a slide. Visuals should add structure: show a process, comparison, spatial relationship, or example. When a narrator reads an on-screen paragraph, students process the same information through two channels at once and tire more quickly.

Identify the first explanation of every complex term. Mark where a diagram appears, when it changes, and which detail needs attention. This makes editing more precise.

Plan for Accessibility

Add subtitles, text alternatives, descriptions of important images, and operation without sound to the storyboard. If meaning is conveyed only through color, use a shape or label. Designing for accessibility from the start costs less than fixing it after publication.

Check the pace: does the person have time to read an element, examine a diagram, and act? State approximate scene durations without forcing a complex moment into an arbitrary running time.

Run a Read-Through Before Filming

Bring together the expert, instructional designer, and person responsible for production. Follow the lesson sequentially as if you were a student. Identify missing steps, inconsistent terms, inaccessible resources, and visuals that cannot be produced within budget.

After approval, lock in the version. Later changes are possible, but the team should see their effect on assets already prepared.

The Working Deliverable

Create a storyboard for one typical lesson and take it through the complete production cycle. After testing, turn its structure into a template for the rest of the program.

In WeStudy, you can assemble finished videos, texts, assignments, and documents in the planned sequence, preserving the storyboard's instructional logic.
